Foundation Stage Art

Foundation stage (ages 3-5) is a really interesting stage in children’s development where they are usually happy to work with any art material and explore all kinds of possibilities. I have studied the stages of development for part of my dipolma in ‘Children and Young People’ and I find it fascinating to witness the change from playful scribbles to representational drawings (this usually happens at age 3.)

When working with foundation stage I like to make the most of their natural enthusiasm for creativity by exposing them to as many different materials as possible. This can include painting with different objects such as feathers or straws, wax resist drawings, printing, marbling, bubble art, collage, or sand painting. After exploring these possibilities it is an exciting challenge to come up with some kind of finished piece whether that is a mural of children’s drawings, a patchwork textiles piece incorporating the children’s paintings, or a sculptural piece
